Announcement of Conference “Women in Real Sector: Agenda for Ukraine”

We are pleased to announce a conference “Women in Real Sector: Agenda for Ukraine”. The conference will be conducted by Centre of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production together with International Financial Corporation (IFC) in Kyiv on May 21, 2015

The international community recognizes the establishment of gender equity a priority of global development. Introduction of gender equity in the system of social relations recognized as the fundamental value, which leads to positive changes in the economic, humanitarian, social dimensions, and is a powerful reserve for the progress of any country. Gender mainstreaming is a crosscutting element of economic and social policy of the European Community, and coordination of family and professional lives of men and women, enabling them to realize their equal rights proclaimed today as one of the basic components in the solution of social problems.

Standards of equal treatment for men and women is a part of the EU legislation and relevant directives. Ukraine has repeatedly confirmed that shares the principle of equal rights and opportunities for women and men and having signed Association Agreement it made a commitment to the full implementation of the European standards regarding gender equality in the labor market (particularly in industrial relations). Ukraine has historically developed legislation that prohibits discrimination against women and includes special measures to improve their status in the public sector, particularly in the labor market. Unfortunately, the legal standards are not always fully embodied in life, especially in the period of crisis in the economy, especially in the field of industrial development. However, the Ukrainian women have a strong starting position, which allows changing their status in industry and aligning their opportunities in the real economy. The conference focuses on the perspectives of transformation of the status of women in industrial development.

Topics to be discussed:

• promoting gender oriented policies as a cross-cutting theme of economic and social development of the European Community;

• gender equity in labor market as the key to human potential for industry development: the role of state and employers;

• opportunities to strengthen gender component in industrial sector as part of Ukraine's obligations under the Agreement on Free Trade Zone between Ukraine and the EU;

• women as change agents: impact on improving corporate social responsibility and success stories;

• strengthening institutional basis for gender equity in industry as a way to improve the efficiency.

RECPC analytical publication on the status and capabilities of gender equity in industry in compliance with the EU requirements will be presented at the conference.

The conference participants include representatives of the Swiss Cooperation Office, Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, International Labor Organization, program "UN Women" in Ukraine, representatives of employers’ organizations, industrial companies, financial institutions and the leading NGOs involved in gender equity issues.
