International Resource Forum-2015 in Davos

WRF DavosOn October 11-14, 2015 International Resource Forum-2015 took place in Davos (Switzerland). Forum was dedicated to the 20th anniversary from the start of implementation of programs and cleaner production in the world which coincides with the 20th anniversary since signing of the Agreement in the area of industrial development between the Government of Ukraine and UNIDO (December 8, 1995). The conference was attended by more than 600 delegates from 108 countries. The representatives of national cleaner production centers and organizations that implement and promote resource-efficient and cleaner production including the representatives from the Ukrainian RECP Centre attended Forum.

The concept of efficient use of resources provides exceptional benefits for the economy, job creation, social justice and environmental protection. Increased awareness that resources are limited, and commodity prices are rising, encourages the entrepreneurs around the world to search for business models that do not require extensive resources consumption.

Therefore, investments in processing technologies become crucial and should be focused on increasing the productivity of natural resources, and not on maximizing profits through more extensive development. It is clear that 75% of the infrastructure that will be required in 2050, has yet to be built, and this creates tremendous opportunities for starting new businesses based on the principles of resource efficiency.

Various investors are actively looking for quality investment opportunities in the field of sustainable consumption and production, but are often unable to find them due to the lack of information. This may be achieved through creation of regional investment platform that would attract financial institutions and enterprises to cooperate for effective use of resources. As Diane Dillon-Ridhli, the Executive Director of the organization "Women for a sustainable future", said: "When people ask me where have you seen the business examples of the use of resources for sustainable development, I put a counter-question: Where have you seen a business that seeks to destroy life on the Earth?"

In total, in the frame of the Forum over 30 seminars on various aspects of circulation economics and international management of resources that form the agenda were held. In conditions of the lack of natural resources and global and economic problems, humanity is forced to seek for the new development models, different from those that exist today. One possible way out of this situation is a circulating economy. It is based on the use of closed value chain (instead of conventional linear) that allows one to use waste from one production process as a resource for another production process. In the global context, this approach aims to create a new system of relationships between society, economy and environment.

The activities of the Forum were dedicated to the fourth Global Network Conference on RECP during which report and election conference, seminars and network meetings of national RECP centers took place. Voting resulted in election of Aida Szilagyi (Romania) the Head of network of national RECP centres in EECA region.
